The Bakeries Locals Love in San Miguel de Allende
The Best Bakeries in San Miguel de Allende
In San Miguel de Allende people are pretty particular about where they get their bread.
Whether it’s a morning baguette, a proper croissant, or a box of traditional Mexican pastries for when your Mexican mother-in-law comes to visit, knowing the local bakeries is part of feeling at home here. As people explore the different neighborhoods of San Miguel de Allende, before long, most people have a few favorite spots they return to again and again.
For many buyers considering a move to San Miguel, these small everyday details matter just as much as views and architecture.
Here are some of the bakeries locals return to again and again.
Buonforno
A favorite among residents, buonfornon has earned a reputation for baking some of the best baguettes in San Miguel. Their breads have a wonderful crust and texture, and the bakery is especially known for its cookies and almond croissants, which are often among the first things to disappear each morning. Located in the San Antonio neighborhood, Buonforno has become a favorite for regulars picking up fresh bread or pastries to take home. If you’re planning to visit, it’s best to arrive early — like many of the most popular bakeries in town, their shelves tend to empty quickly.
Panina
Panina Bakery in San Antonio Neighborhood.
Sterling Dickinson #3, San Antonio
Panina has built a loyal following for its sourdough breads and bagels — still something of a rarity in San Miguel. In addition to its baked goods, Panina also offers baking classes for those interested in learning the craft of sourdough and artisanal bread making. Like Buonforno, this is a place where the best items don’t last all day, and regulars know it’s worth arriving early if you have something specific in mind. The café itself is small and often busy, so finding a table can sometimes be a challenge, but that lively atmosphere is part of the charm.
Panio
Panio Bakery on Correo
4 Locations: Calle Relox 18, Centro | Calle Correo 29, Centro | Salida a Celaya | Luciernaga Mall
Panio is one of San Miguel’s most established bakeries and a dependable staple for both residents and visitors. Known for its French-style pastries, fresh baguettes, and classic breads, it also offers a range of Mexican favorites that make it an easy stop for just about any craving. Whether you’re picking up a croissant and coffee to go or selecting a loaf of bread for dinner, Panio is one of those places locals return to again and again.
Its sister restaurant, Companio on Correo — conveniently located across from the CDR Forbes office — is a favorite spot for long breakfasts and relaxed people-watching. With its comfortable courtyard seating and generous menu, it’s a place where many people linger over coffee, fresh pastries, and simple breakfast dishes while watching the rhythm of the city pass by.
La Buena Vida
La Buena Vida panaderia with arguably the best doughnuts in San Miguel de Allende
Panadería La Buena Vida is famous for its doughnuts — especially the orange doughnut, which many locals consider a must-try.
They also sell puff pastry dough to take home — a welcome option for anyone who hasn’t the patience to make it from scratch.
Marulier
Fresh pastries and coffee at Marulier bakery in San Miguel de Allende, a popular spot for breakfast and French-style baking.
Marulier is another bakery with strong French influence and has become a favorite for both pastries and breakfast. Their croissants, fruit tarts, and macarons are particularly good, and the café menu includes dishes like chilaquiles, eggs, and croissant sandwiches. With locations near Mercado Sano on Ancha de San Antonio and at Plaza La Luciérnaga, Marulier is also a comfortable place to linger over coffee. The terrace seating at the San Antonio location makes it a pleasant stop for breakfast or a mid-morning pastry.
El Maple
Fresh Bread and Pastries at Panaderia El Maple
Located on Salida a Celaya, El Maple is known for its sandwich rolls, cookies, and everyday bread — making it a practical stop for residents heading home, or to stock up for weekend gatherings. They are our go to bakery for their sandwich rolls.
La Colmena
Panaderia La Colmena in Centro Historico, San Miguel de Allende.
La Colmena is the oldest bakery in San Miguel de Allende, founded in 1901.
It specializes in traditional Mexican pastries and sweets and remains a beloved stop in Centro neighborhood for locals and visitors alike. When you arrive, grab a tray and make your way behind the counter to select the items you want.
Casita Feliz
La Casita Feliz Bakery in Guadiana Neighborhood
Casita Feliz is well known among residents of Guadiana and nearby neighborhoods, offering cookies, delicious cakes and pies. You can order your custom cake in advance and they can make almost anything. Their Nutella cake is always a hit. They make great empanadas but they’re not usually ready until noon and then they usually sell out in a couple of hours.
El Petit Four

El Petit Four offers a slightly more refined pastry selection, with a café serving breakfast and light lunches alongside its pastries and baked goods. While the menu includes savory options, it’s the pastries that truly stand out — elegant European-style creations that feel closer to what you might find in a French pâtisserie. Their chocolate éclairs in particular are exceptional and one of my personal favorites in San Miguel. For those looking for beautifully made desserts and pastries, El Petit Four has become a reliable stop for something both sophisticated and delicious.
City Market (Honorable Mention)
City Market Coffee and Gelato Shop
City Market earns an honorary spot for its coffee shop. Located in La Lejona its within walking distance of many neighborhoods.
They serve excellent coffee drinks, great gelato (often much more affordable than in Centro), and every hot coffee comes with a complimentary small croissant and sweet roll — a small but appreciated touch. City Market has become a popular spot for locals to meet up with friends, clients or get some work done without going to the office.
